Excerpt from the book:
\"Suddenly in the middle of complete darkness over the brow of the hill the desert becomes awash with light. Even from 10 miles away you can make out exactly where the main strip is as the lights rise along the middle and fall away at the edges and sides. It's hard not to be amazed by it all. It is like seeing a very large cruise ship out at sea in complete darkness. As we approached the city limits the driver began to give a run down of do`s and don'ts in Vegas. The place was basically safe for tourists as long as you stayed on the strip. Don't go either side of the strip, don't go past the stratosphere casino at one end and then where the large hotels end at the other. This was no mans land and you are just as likely to get shot, stabbed, car jacked, burnt, crucified, hung, drawn and quartered, vapourised, beamed into space or bitten during the day or night. Just last week he went on about some tourists who had their hands cut off when they drove off the edge of the strip and would not give up their wallets and phones. Brings a whole new meaning to losing just the shirt off your back in Vegas!! We felt like the original explorers, Columbus Vasco Da Gama or Luis Váez de Torres, would we simply fall off the end of the world if we went to the end of the strip? After informing us of our impending deaths, and as we were quickly writing notes to our loved ones and making the other one promise to hand them in if they didn't make it back, he asked where we were staying? "Nowhere" replied Groz, "Can you recommend anywhere?" He named a few places and said the best he could do was to drop us at the strip and we could take it from there. We pulled over by a monster of a hotel and got out, thanked him for the lift and information. "Should have asked if I could have borrowed one of his M16`s", I said to Groz as he sped away, "I'm sure he wouldn't miss one". We had seen the Stardust in films, was a known name and as Jan & Tony, Groz`s parents had stayed there, we opted for that.\"
